Dark Emu

Dark Emu was inspired by the book Dark Emu, written by Bruce Pascoe which is a book that offers a new interpretation of Australian history especially through the lens of the Indigenous people. The title I assumed was referring to the Dark Emu in the milky way that you can see on clear night in an area with low light pollution. It is the dark patch between the stars that is seen across the entire milky way. I approached this piece exploring how I thought Bruce Pascoe was using that title to suggest a metaphorical interpretation of how history can contain within it serious blind spots of awareness.
